| We have made it through the depths of another winter! Hurrah! Yet, one must ever prepare for the next gaunt days to come. Soon comes the planting, then tending and the harvest. Then how do we prepare for the fallow days ahead? The Feast of the Gaunt Days is a chance for the victuallers to show off their prowess! Pickle the pickles, jerk that meat, salt, dry, preserve and otherwise make the food ready for those days when fresh food is not to be found!|
This pot luck is part informal foodie-schola, wherein anyone can either come and just eat and enjoy the day, or show off your finest concoctions for judging and sharing (or just sharing), and part schmoozefest. The day starts with getting the judging out of the way so that by lunch and throughout the day the rest of us can sample, learn techniques and swap tips. Those bringing a dish for judging that feeds more than 4 people get a chance at stunning prizes and our deepest gratitude. Before the event, maybe it’s a good time to hold local workshops and teach some classes on preservation? (We’ve already had a cheese making workshop! Jealous?) Several laurels will attend and guilds are already sending representatives to the event, too.
Prize categories include (but are not limited to): The People’s Choice, February Fruits, Check Out that Pickle! Meat Me in the Wintertime, Lenten Lunchtime, Roots for the Home Team, Vegetable from Yestermonth, Blessed Cheesemakers, Drinks that Aren’t Just Melted Snow, Superb Soups and Stews, You’re So Sweet! and None of the Above.
Costs: $0. Donations are gratefully accepted at the door.
The site is not dry, but do try not to stagger out into the busy street.
