Another year has passed and once again the call goes out for fencers to gather and test their skill and broaden their knowledge of the true art.  Come and join the Riding of Giggleswick as we host the Northern Region Rapier Academy and Championship.  With the summer ending and the colder months ahead come and learn things to practice over the winter and cross blades with fellow fencers.  The day will consist of a track of classes and free bouting, a delicious dayboard lunch, followed by the Northern Region Championship Tourney.

Authorizations and Inspections


10-10:45am:

Unclasping the cloak
Instructor:  Don Frasier MacLeod

This class will be a basic summary on the use of the cloak.  Offensive and defensive techniques will be covered as well as using the cloak to make space and close distance with your opponent.


Melee tactics
Instructor:  Captain Jean du Montagne

This class will cover tactics used in melee combat.  Whether 5-man or large melee, this class will cover strategies and tactics to create a more cohesive and effective fighting unit on the melee field.


11-11:45am

Avoiding dogmatic approaches in fencing instruction
Instructor:  Colonel Christian Woolfe

A best practices class.

This class is designed to present situational analysis of fencing instruction.  The course will identify ways to improve instruction and provide for the best possible experience of the student. 
Some of the situations covered:
-Student teacher dynamics
-Creating a positive environment
-Dealing with challenging situations
-Multiple schools of thought regarding period technique
-Lesson planning and collaboration with other instructors
This course is best suited to beginning teachers as well as seasoned instructors looking for a refresher course. 
While no specific period text will be used there will be references to these texts as a means of furthering our discussion.


Gender Issues in SCA Rapier
Hosted by:  Mistress Mercedes Vera de Calafia

A round table discussion of issues on topics such as gender specific armor, pregnancy, competition, gender socialization and relationships.  Attendance is open to all genders and all martial activities.

Don't Be There - Body Voids
Instructor:  Mistress Brita Mairi Svensdottir

A hands-on class with drills to help you practice getting out of the way of your opponent's blade by moving your
body.  Covering both defensive and offensive (slope attack) maneuvers.


Beyond the basics
Instructor:  Don Jordan Harvey

This class will teach you to create your own drills for combinations and advanced techniques.

A round table discussion and Q&A session to help demystify the companions of the Order of the Golden Rapier.  This is an open forum.

Take exit #3/Coastal Route (ME-236N)Kittery/S.  Berwick toward ME-236 Berwick - go 0.5 mi
Turn right on Harold L Dow HWY (ME-236) - go 1.4 mi
Continue to follow ME-236 North - go 5.1 mi
Arrive at 912 Harold L Dow HWY, Eliot, on Right

 
Event Fees
Site : Site fee:  $12 or $7 with proof of membership.  $5.00 for children 6 to 17 (regardless of membership).Children 5 and under free.

Acceptable proof of membership would include a copy of your membership card, a current Pikestaff label with your name on it, or proof of membership letter from the SCA web site.  The site fee includes the day board for all those that attend.

Feast: During the day those who wish to partake in a wonderful day board, will be able to do so in the lower hall, which also provides plenty of room for gaming and socializing.
