Hosted by Kingdom of Ealdormere - Mississauga, ON
Event Last Modified: June 18th, 2014
Event details
Ealdormere's first-ever Known World Heraldic and Scribal Symposium.  Will be held in the Canton of Eoforwic, mundanely the City of Toronto, Canada on June 26th through June 28th 2015.

Toronto is an expensive city, but is by far the easiest city in Ealdormere for those outside the Kingdom to reach via air.  The proximity of the hotel to the airport (free shuttle) and the included parking fees should help keep costs down for attendees.  We are also hoping to lower the event fee by $ 10 CAD through pre-event fundraising.

Proceedings:  CD copies of the proceedings will be included in the gate fee.  Additional copies will be available for $ 5.  Hard copies will be available by special order only.

Food:  Cost includes buffet lunch on Saturday.

Hospitality Suite:  Snacks (both medieval and modern) will be available in the hospitality suite.

On site:  The De Maple Lounge and Restaurant is a full-service dining establishment onsite, including gluten-free options.

Nearby:  There are a wide variety of restaurants within walking distance or a short drive of the hotel.  A list of these will be available to attendees.

Rooms:  The hotel has 204 guest rooms.  The reduced lodging rate for this event is $ 125/night.  All rooms are 100% non-smoking (as per Ontario law).  Free wi-fi access is included as well as free parking.

Proposed Schedule:

Friday:  Registration opens.  Evening Reception

Saturday:  Classes from 9AM-4PM (classes end @5PM).  Four class tracks, including both heraldic and scribal topics

Saturday Evening:  Ball and/or concert, time TBD.  At the very least, the local dance community will coordinate a ball/revel.  We are hoping to schedule a concert by a local musician of some renown in the SCA (who also happens to be a Trillium Herald Emerita) but this will depend on her touring schedule.

Sunday:  Laurel Road Show

Guest Speaker:  TBD.  Possibilities may include someone from the Canadian Heraldic authority

Possible field trips (for Friday and/or Sunday afternoon)

Royal Ontario Museum (ROM)

Gardiner Museum

Art Gallery of Ontario

Queen Street West Textile district

Area attractions:

Toronto is the largest city in Canada and offers a wide variety of attractions.  The city will host the Pan Am Games later in the summer of 2015, so many infrastructure improvements are underway.  The extensive public transit system makes access to all parts of the city easy for those who do not have access to a car.

Besides the attractions listed above, other things to do include:

• Hockey Hall of Fame 20.9 km/13.0 miles

• Black Creek Pioneer Village 16.1 km/10.0 miles

• Casa Loma 24.1 km/15.0 miles (Toronto's Edwardian castle)

• CN Tower 25.0 km/15.5 miles

• Fort York

• Ontario Science Centre 32.2 km/20.0 miles

• Wild Water Kingdom 12.0 km/7.5 miles

• Rogers Centre (formerly SkyDome) 19.0 km/11.8 miles (Blue Jays baseball games)

• Air Canada Centre 25.0 km/15.5 miles

• Princess of Wales Theatre 27.5 km/17.1 miles

• Canada's Wonderland 35.0 km/21.8 miles (amusement park)

• Metro Toronto Zoo 38.6 km/24.0 miles (featuring pandas on loan from China)

• Yorkdale Shopping Mall 17.2 km/10.7 miles

• Eaton Centre 20.9 km/13.0 miles

• Vaughan Mills Mall 27.4 km/17.0 miles

Toronto also is a multicultural city with a wide variety of amazing restaurants from cultures around the world.  Those of a creative bent will want to plan a trip to the textile district centred on Queen St.  West, where a variety of fabric and notions stores may be found, as well as an outstanding assortment of beading stores.  Another favorite SCA shopping destination is the Gerrard St.  Indian Bazaar (Little India) where silk sarees, trim, cooking gear and spices, and gifts and textiles from South Asia may be had.

You are also just over an hour away from Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake, home to many wineries and the Shaw Festival (theatre).
Site Opens: Friday at 5 pm
Site Closes: Sunday after the Laurel Road Show.

Event Location
Sheraton Four Points Toronto Airport
6257 Airport Rd
Mississauga, ON  L4V 1E4

Transportation:  The hotel has a dedicated complimentary shuttle from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).  We also expect the Toronto Pearson Metrolinx Shuttle (train) to be available from Union Station downtown in 2015, allowing easy access for those arriving by train or via Billy Bishop Airport (YTZ) (Porter Airlines and some Air Canada flights).  The 192 Airport Rocket express bus also serves Toronto Pearson from the Kipling Subway Station (westernmost terminus).  Hotel is conveniently located near major highways (401/409) for those driving.  For US residents flying into Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) and then travelling to Toronto via car or bus is sometimes a less expensive option.

International Travel:  Please note that while visas are not required to visit Canada from the US, Australia, and most European nations, a passport (or enhanced drivers' license, generally available in some states adjacent to Canada) is required.  Exchange rate as of this bid is $ 1 CAD - $ 0.91 USD.

Event Fees
Site : Event fees $ 60 (CAD) or $ 55 (USD).  US dollar cheques are acceptable for reservations made before the deadline.  Fees include Saturday lunch and one CD copy of the proceedings.
