Event details
Come one and all as the glorious Barony of Dragonship Haven once again welcomes you to the St.Eligius Arts and Sciences Competition and Display!  As in past years expect fantastic arts and sciences, encouraging conversation, beautiful arts, shared knowledge, celebrated prowess on the fencing field, and most excellent prizes all crafted by our gifted Worshipful Company of Artificers and friends.

An outstanding dayboard is being planned and prepared by Lady Rhode Kephalania.  As is our Barony's long tradition concerning food, it will be imaginative, delicious and hearty.

Their Excellencies Master Joseph of the Red Griffin and Mistress Brose of Greyling, Baron and Baroness of Dragonship Haven will hold court to celebrate the participants and their works, reward the winners, and invest the newest Baronial Champions.

Court will be followed by a pot luck refreshment and dessert board.  Please feel free to donate your favorite dessert for the board (For the comfort of our friends, please include a full ingredient list with your dessert donation.)

The St.  Eligius A&S contest and all the smaller specialized contests are outlined below and full rules for all contests can be found at http://dragonshiphaven.eastkingdom.org/events/st-eligius-arts-sciences-competition/ All those wishing to display their works, new old or in progress are especially welcome.  *Please note* some NEW rule changes were made on 9/5/2016.

In addition to the featured A&S competition, fencers are invited to enter Lord Christoffel's Art of Fencing Challenge.  Choose your favorite period fencing Master’s style, bring documentation of the Master you chose to represent along with a description of the play you choose to use.  Describe the action and perform your moves for judges.  The judging criteria will be the same as the A&S as applicable.  MOD, Dons and Dona's, please feel free to contact one of the Marshals if you wish to help judge a style.  Fencing Steward, Lord Christoffel d'Allaines le Comte manages this tourney.  For further info please contact him at Amos Brooks amosbrooks@gmail.com

An outline of the rules for the several A&S contests follows.

The St.  Eligius A&S Contest is designed to be something like an armored combat or fencing tourney, so this contest requires face-to-face scoring.  You must accompany your entry to enter this competition.  Each contestant declares his entry as belonging to one of the following groups:
NOVICEs have entered up to 2 small competitions & feel inexperienced in A&S contests.  Novices are further divided into A and B with A being new to the SCA and B being more than 3 years in the SCA butn new to A&S contests.  (Analogy:  competes in Rookie’s Tourney)
ARTISANs have entered competitions and have experienced getting feedback & refining their entry so it shows to best advantage.  (Analogy:  competes in Cadet’s/Squire’s Tourney)
EXPERIENCED COMPETITORs have entered several local or Kingdom-wide contests.  This group also includes any Laurel whose entry is anything-BUT-what-they-were-laureled-for.  (Analogy:  competes in King and Queen’s Championship Tourney)
LAURELS & MASTERS are either members of the Order of the Laurel entering examples of the work(s) for which they received their recognition, or any non-Laurel who chooses to enter in this group and demonstrate their mastery of an art or science.  (Analogy:  competes in Best of the Knowne World Tourney)

Since it is the combatants who declare the winner of their bout, St.  Eligius entrants will score entries in their contest group.  Orientation to scoring will be available for each entrant and a consultant experienced in A&S scoring will be available to assist members of each group.  The St.  Eligius 12 Questions sheet should accompany entries (strongly recommended) but other documentation is accepted.  There is no age limit on entries.  Bring your best but limit yourself to one entry--although an entry can contain several related items.  You don’t want to compete against yourself.  Research papers are limited to 8 pages & must be submitted electronically by Nov 3rd to aligori@pobox.com.  Although they will be read and scored by non-contestants, face-to-face discussion and scoring will occur.

Several special competitions are being held concurrently.  Selected judges will choose the winners.  Scorers will seek out entrants in these competitions to discuss their work, but detailed written scoring will not be available.

Baron Adhemar Challenge (new this year):  This is a challenge in honor of the late Baron Adhemar.  He loved four things above all:  laughter, food, the Hundred Years’ War, and music.  Pick aspects of any two of these topics and combine them into something he would appreciate.

Collaboration (new this year):  Celebrating medieval society, we are instituting a group challenge.  Please enter a project accomplished by 2 or more artisans where each has contributed different skills to the finished work.  Documentation should describe the item and highlight each artisan’s contribution to the work.

Misadventures!  (new this year):  We believe that successful artistry is more about trial and error than sheer raw talent.  Please show off some of your examples of your mistakes, disasters and unintended consequences.  Often this is more interesting and encouraging to struggling beginners than perfection.

Artisan's Progress:  Encourage others by displaying 3-5 examples of your work showing how your skill has progressed.  Please include something from early in your career (even if that was last week).  Works may (but need not) be entered for individual scores.  Documentation should be very brief with rough dates of completion.

Medieval Moment:  In honor of our patron, St.  Eligius, we are asking that entries include a brief description of your experience of a Medieval Moment during the preparation of your project.  Please describe (verbally or in writing) something that brought you closer to the artisan who originated the work you have adapted or used for inspiration.  Descriptions may be written or verbal.  A good story always scores well.  See question # 12 in St.  Eligius 12 Questions.

Master Alexander Challenge:  In the spirit of Master Alexander the Younger, enter example(s) of your work in an art that is new to you within the last year..  The prize is will be chosen and presented by Lady Cassandra de Matisse or her representative.

SCA Kluge (a competition for smart alecks) Please show off your non-period items made with a medieval flair (e.g.  camp furniture, lawn ornament, beanie).  Documentation is welcome.

Populace Choice:  Vote for your favorite entry.  Most beans wins.

Baron & Baronesses Choice:  Catch their Excellencies’ eye and gain their praise and a prize.  The Barony of Dragonship Haven’s A&S Champion will also be selected at this event.

A DISPLAY is planned so people are encouraged to exhibit beautiful and marvelous works to amuse and astonish those present.

A&S Contest Coodinator this year is Baroness Brose aligori@pobox.com Full Rules of Engagement, Score sheet and St.  Eligius 12 Questions (suggested documentation form) can be found at http://dragonshiphaven.eastkingdom.org/events/st-eligius-arts-sciences-competition/

We are hoping to see you at this event.  We want to see how this contest works out.  Be prepared to have a fascinating day and to give feedback so we can refine and improve this contest.

A note about heavy list:
There will be no heavy list at St.  Elegius this year.  Your local marshal, Baron Gerard D'Aigues-Mortes, encourages all heavy fighters to seriously consider entering the A&S competition or putting your items on display.
